Sophia University Island Sustainability Symposium
JST Sakura Science 2019 Wrap-up
Thursday, 3 October 2019
TIME: 13:30 to 16:00
PLACE: Sophia University, Building 2, 17th Floor, Room 1702
Islands are on the frontlines of many of the
most serious environmental challenges of
the 21st Century. Climate change,
biodiversity loss, invasive alien species,
water scarcity, food security, poverty
alleviation, the list of challenges is long.
Finding that balance between ecological and
socio-economic viability poses challenges to
all. If islands are the canary in the mines,
the very solutions to island sustainability is
the critical key to achieving global
sustainability.This is an interdisciplinary
symposium that brings together differing
disciplines, approaches and perspectives
towards building Pan-Pacific Island
Sustainability.
This symposium is also a wrap-up of the
Sakura Science 2019 field trip between
Sophia University and Javeriana University
that took students and professors to the
field in Izu-Oshima and Hegura Island.
Building on the field-based experiences and
lessons co-learnt in Japan, this wrap-up
symposium intends to share experiences
and perspectives on island sustainability
challenges and potentials.
